Wild Seed, 2024
On May 24, 2024, Wild Seed Poetry and Arts Collective in partnership with Jamii Publishing invited Black poets and writers to celebrate black arts in Oceanside, California. At this writing retreat there was one goal: to create a space in which Black women and Black folx can be writers and artists and enjoy community.
This program was born out of the recognition that the arts have the power to transform and express culture in profound ways, especially as it pertains to black women writers. Through our collective experiences and observations, we have witnessed how the arts can be a catalyst for social change, personal growth, and community empowerment. Sisterhood and black arts can be tool and a unique platform for marginalized voices to be heard, stories to be shared, and experiences to be understood. This retreat allowed our participants to cultivate new and innovative works and reflect on the richness and diversity of culture.
The retreat culminated in an anthology of poetry: Saltwater: A Wild Seed Poetry & Arts Anthology, and an art exhibit of photographs and images, from the writers at the retreat. This program aimed to amply the process of creation, and joy, and the unique needs of our community with a wider audience.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Riverside Art Museum for their invaluable support in making this exhibit a reality. Our deepest thanks also go to the California Arts Council for their generous backing. As a proud recipient of the Impact Arts grant, Jamii Publishing is immensely grateful for the opportunity to nurture this vision in the Inland Empire.
